How I Built This Minimalist Engineering Portfolio

Table of Contents

When organizing my high school research projects and competition writeups, I wanted a portfolio that felt like an engineer’s workbench rather than a marketing flyer.

Many modern portfolio templates are overloaded with animations, heavy client-side scripts, and generic design patterns that distract from technical content. I wanted something clean, fast, and durable.

Technical Choices

  1. Astro Static Architecture: Pages are pre-rendered to pure HTML at build time. There is no heavy runtime framework executing unnecessary JavaScript in the user’s browser.
  2. Markdown Content Collections: Every project and note lives in plain text Markdown. Content is fully typed with Zod schema validation during compilation.
  3. Client-Side Pagefind Search: Rather than maintaining a complex search backend, Pagefind generates a lightweight static index directly during build time, allowing instant keyword lookups.
  4. Cloudflare Pages & Vercel Edge Hosting: Deployed to globally distributed edge networks with near-zero cold starts and zero hosting costs.

The goal of a portfolio is not to showcase flashy UI gimmicks. It is to present empirical data, design decisions, and hardware prototypes as clearly as possible.
